Prof. Alvin S. Weinstein
Prof. Alvin S. Weinstein University of Michigan, Ph.D. , M.S., and B.S. (all in Mechanical Engineering); Franklin Pierce Law Center, J.D. Dr. Weinstein is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering & Public Policy, Carnegie‑Mellon University, where he taught from 1955 to 1985. He also taught law at Franklin Pierce Law Center from 1985 to 1990. Since taking emeritus status, Dr. Weinstein has served as a Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) for, and legal and technical consultant to, industry on products liability prevention and an adviser on design, user communications, and safety assurance programs (for companies as diverse as General Electric, CNA Insurance, Nissan, Union Carbide, U.S. Marine, American Optical, American Shear Knife, Jones & Laughlin, Rockwell, US Steel, and Westinghouse). Among his many honors, from 1980 to 1990 he was the Chair of the Committee on Design, Engineering and the Law of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a member of panels and for the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), the Brookings Institution, the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) (today the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)). He is the co-author of PRODUCTS LIABILITY AND THE REASONABLY SAFE PRODUCT and AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF ENGINEERING. He has given invited presentations to the National Science Foundation (NSF), American Management Assn., and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He has published scores of books chapters as well as articles and papers in peer reviewed scientific and technical journals (such as SCIENCE, IRON & STEEL ENGINEER, JOURNAL OF MECHANICS & APPLIED MATHEMATICS, JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY, JOURNAL OF MECHANICS OF PHYSICS & SOLIDS, INT’L JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCES, and JOURNAL OF LUBRICATION TECHNOLOGY) and articles in TEXAS LAW REVIEW, CORNELL LAW REVIEW, and NYU LAW REVIEW.
